hi! i had a similar situation. i had a 2 yr old girl and was wondering which was best. i got a boy for nixie...and they get along famously!! from what i understand, if you have a girl, a boy is the easiest to mesh into your household...and if you already have a boy, you're lucky! you can go either way...boys are much more laid back than girls... but that's just what i've gathered from my fact-finding missions. i'm sure there are some other folks out there much more informed than i. but i can tell you with confidence that the boy/girl combo is fantastic!! we've had cleatus in our home for almost a month (he was a rescued stray from heartland weim rescue) and it's almost as if he's always been with us. nixie's got a buddy, and i couldnt be happier that she incessantly bothers somebody else now to play tug-of-war. :) good luck with your search!
